It’s Time for Türkiye

We hereby bring to your attention the statement made by Nedim Korhan Şengün, the co-founder of Şengün & Partners Attorney Partnership, regarding the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey”

“As you know, our nation has been referred to as “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” in some media outlets for some time. Consequently, upon Türkiye’s request, the United Nations resolved to use “Türkiye” to refer to the country in foreign languages as of 1 June 2022, eliminating the use of “Turkey” in any language.

This process was more about protecting the brand value of “Türkiye” than about the word “Turkey” having another meaning in English. Türkiye engages in significant activities in a variety of industries across the world, which enhances its reputation. People only naturally refer to these activities by the nation’s name in their native tongue, promoting Türkiye’s international reputation. As a result, the UN deemed this proposal suitable and authorized it.

The UN resolution has been in effect for almost two months; however, we observe that “Turkey” is still used in some Turkish sources. Unfortunately, some of these users are institutions and people who should be the first to grasp the significance of this issue and its future implications to communicate them to others. Therefore, hereby, we would like to underline the UN resolution and draw attention to the critical nature of this issue.

We hope that “Türkiye” will continue to gain value in the future….”
